PostHeaderIcon Guidelines To Purchase Adequate Climbing Equipment

Rock and mountain climbing is one of the most popular of the extreme sports. One of the things about rock climbing is the equipment which can cost a pretty penny but you do want to make sure that you are buying only the best because you want to be safe no matter what the cost. If you choose to use the equipment that is not of the highest quality you are allowing yourself to be put into danger because the equipment may fail when you are on the side of a mountain. This can be very dangerous to say the least.

The first and probably most important piece of rocking climbing equipment that you are going to buy is the rope. Most often people think that rope is rope but that is anything but true. Standard rope can not withstand the friction and pressure that is required for rock climbing. The standard for rock climbing rope is the type that is millions of strands of high tolerance fiber that are woven together and then fused with other woven bands of fiber. Once all is woven together you get the tinsel strength that is very important. The best thing about this type of rope is the way that it will stretch and accept the weight of the person that is being suspended.

A rope bag is another important piece of rock climbing equipment. An important part of rock climbing safety is to be sure that all of the equipment is keeping it all clean and dry. The rope is very important when it comes to keep clean. If you get the rope dirty with oil or what have you there is a very good chance that it can fail when it is being used. The rope bag is very good for helping to keep it clean and dry. The rope is fed into the bag and then it is pulled out once it is needed while climbing. This is also in place to make sure that the rope does not get tangled or knotted during the climb which can spell disaster for the climber.

Rock climbing shoes are also important. The shoes that should be worn for rock climbing are specifically designed for such things with soles that help the climber grip the rocks with their feet. In most cases they would recommend that the novice wear a lace up shoe. This is due to the fact that when you are new to the sport you do not want any kind of slippage. The lace up shoes also have a thicker sole which allows for more comfort and less pain on the rock. The experienced climber will most likely go with the slipper style of shoe which has an ultra thin sole. The thin sole allows the climber to feel the rocks with the feet as there are climbing, adding an extra bit of safety.

Carabiners come close to the top as far as importance goes with rock climbing equipment. The carabiner is a quick release anti-fail device that allows the climber to move the rope and also go up and down without a lot of hassle. The carabiners that are sold these days are fairly simple to use and the best ones are made out of high temperature steel. A cheap carabiner will most likely break and this can cause a fall from the side of the mountain.

Follow these guidelines, gear up for rock climbing, and you will surely have a great, fun and safe outdoor experience.

PostHeaderIcon Essential Skills For Mountain Biking

With some practice, you can become a wonderful mountain biker. Practice the techniques described in this article and you will be on your way to becoming a better biker.

Anyone who enjoys riding a bike will also enjoy the sport of mountain biking. It is a little more dangerous and adrenaline inducing, but it is quite a bit of fun and a challenge to ride the dirt trails.

If you want to practice mountain biking, then you can hone your skills around your home, school, bike paths, or even park. You may want to find a place with a steep hill so that you can practice on an incline.

Feeling Your Pedals
You want to get a feel for your pedals before you take off down a mountain. You first want to be able to move your foot away from the pedal and then replace it back on the pedal. This will take some practice to get good at, but once you master this, then you will be on your way to feeling your pedals and having more control.

Position Yourself By Learning To Sit and Spin
Sit on your bike and simply pedal around. Keep your arms a little bent and adjust the height of your seat to make sure that your legs are at least 70% extended when you pedal at the bottom stroke. Relax your body, so that your knees and elbows are never locked. This will enable to you feel the right position so that you will know if you are not riding correctly.

Gear Shifting
You need to learn how to shift the gears on your bike. By learning what each gear feels like, then you will learn how you should shift them to make your riding more competitive and fun. A higher gear will make it more difficult to pedal, but will allow you to go quicker, while a lower gear makes it easy to pedal and is helpful when you are climbing hills. Practicing shifting your gears will help you to learn when to shift to get maximum efficiency.

Coasting
Coasting is great fun. You need to practice coasting while standing up on your pedals. Keep your knees unlocked and your arms bent. Learn how to move your weight toward to back of your bike and get a feel for it.

Standing and Pedaling
It is important that you get comfortable with standing and pedaling on your bicycle. If you can lift yourself from the seat, then you should try cranking the pedals around a few times. Do this in both high and low gear until you become comfortable.

Dropping Down
Locate a curb that you can easily get to the top of. At a moderate speed, stand and coast from the top to the bottom of the curb. Do this using several different curb levels until you are comfortable doing this.

After you get these things where they are second nature, then you will be able to ride the mountain trails with almost no problem. With dedicated practice, you will get to where you love mountain biking and it is comfortable to you.

PostHeaderIcon Outdoor First Aid Kits

Does your family enjoy spending time in the great outdoors? Outdoor first aid kits are essential for families that love the great outdoors. Whether your family enjoys a day at the lake, hiking through the woods, or participating in sports, a first aid kit should be a part of the preparations. Outdoor activities can provide hours of fun for your family, but it is always best to keep in mind that no matter where you are, accidents can happen. A basic, outdoor, or camping first aid kit should include assorted bandages, gauze, adhesive tape, scissors, antibiotic ointment, and over-the-counter pain reliever.

Outdoor kits should include insect sting pads, an instant cold pack and heat compress, sunscreen, emergency thermal blanket, ace bandages, athletic tape, aloe vera gel, calamine lotion, and hydrocortisone cream. For hiking or camping, it is essential to have a three-day supply of water and food. Food should be non-perishable and easy to prepare. It should also be easy to carry in a backpack. The following foods are great for outdoors: peanut butter, crackers, energy bars and granola bars, and trail mix. Another essential item is hard candies. Hard candies quench thirst and can help to save your water supply.

Families that spend a lot of time in the outdoors are usally prepared for lots of fun. It is also important to be prepared for accidents. Common accidents that happen outdoors include cuts, falls, insect bites, and getting lost. It is always best to be prepared for emergencies whether you are in the home, in the vehicle, or enjoying the great outdoors. Before you leave, you should ensure that each member of the family is familiar with the contents of your kit and understands how to use each item.

Whether you camp, hike, or play sports, your outdoor first aid kits should be an essential part of your preparations. Accidents happen when you least expect them whether you are playing a simple game of volleyball, hiking through the mountains, or hunting for big game. The most intelligent and responsible thing you can do for your family is to go prepared and this includes getting the right kit that contains the essential items to meet any emergency situation. Please note that many outdoor or camping kits include special items that may not be needed in the home. We suggest keeping a good outdoor or camping kit in your car and also a general purpose kit in your home. Be prepared, not scared!

PostHeaderIcon How to Choose Between Indoor and Outdoor Boat Storage

Boat storage is something that all boat owners have to worry about sooner rather than later. Most new boat owners experience a few moments of confusion as soon as they realize they need a good place to keep their boats. It can be hard to decide whether or not to store a boat indoors or outdoors. Both storage options offer benefits and negatives. In many situations the final decision is based upon what is easiest and most convenient for the boat owner.

Outdoor boat storage is often the most common and well known and popular type of boat storage. If you are a boat owner that lives near a marina or has easy lake front access then outdoor storage might be the best option. It allows you to easily access the water from your boat whenever you feel like it without having to go through the trouble of transporting your boat. Those who enjoy water sports and outdoors sports will find this arrangement more convenient than other options.

Some boat owners even store their boats outdoors on their own property. Depending on the area it is not uncommon to see boats sitting in backyards or front yards waiting for the families’ next trip to the local lake. Before storing your boat outdoors, take a moment to contact your boat manufacture to make sure the boat you have purchased will be safe outside for long periods of time. This storage option is free and convenient for anyone who owns their own boat but cannot afford indoor storage.

The downside of storing a boat outdoors is the danger of the elements. Rain, wind, and the constant water will lead to damage that can be expensive to repair. In some cases such as bad storms and harsh weather boats stored outdoors can be completely destroyed. There is nothing worse for a boat owner than hearing the news that their boat has been damaged past all hopes of repair.

Another downside of storing a boat outdoors on private property is that not all boats can be easily transported even if you live near the marina. In some situations you will have to pay yearly (usually in the winter) to have the boat moved to your home for storage. This can be an extremely expensive process since outside help will have to be hired to help with the transportation of the boat.

Indoor boat storage has recently seen a rise in popularity. Many boat owners who are tired of dealing with transportation issues have started taking advantage of indoor boat storage. In these situations many boats are kept in one storage facility that is usually quite close to, or part of, the local marina. These facilities make it easy for boat owners to get their boats in and out of the water.

Along with the convenience of being close to the marina indoor boat storage also gives boat owners a chance to take care of boat maintenance. Most indoor boat storage facilities offer large spaces for each boat stored on their property. The large amount of space offered by storage facilities gives boat owners the chance to have routine maintenance and repairs done quickly and easily.

The greatest downside of indoor boat storage is the price. Indoor boat storage is often extremely expensive since a large area is needed to store each individual boat. The storage rates often rise with the size of the boat. There are also additional fees for storing a boat in a heated indoor storage facility. The prices most indoor storage facilities charge can be more than some boat owners can reasonably afford.

The benefits and downsides of indoor and outdoor storage should be considered before making a final choice. It is important that all boat owners make the choice that is best for them and their family. Do not be influenced by too many outside influences, use your own situation and knowledge to help you make your final decision. Once you have gone over the options and made your choice between indoor and outdoor storage never be afraid to change your mind. If you have decided to take advantage of outdoor storage to save money but feel that your boat is being damaged by exposure do not hesitate to look into indoor storage facilities.

Choosing between indoor and outdoor boat storage can be time consuming. Checking into indoor storage options and finding outdoor storage facilities can take time. When you have made your final decision you and your family will be able to enjoy your boat for years to come.
